re: The Auditors Reviews “Top Hedge Fund Investors”

Posted in Uncategorized by Cathleen Rittereiser on December 7, 2010

My friend Francine McKenna posted a review of Top Hedge Fund Investors on her blog re The Auditors

Here’s what she said

Given my lack of objectivity about Cathleen’s fabulousness and minimal knowledge of the hedge fund industry, I asked my good friend, David Fialkowski, to help me.

Dave is Vice President at FISCO Investment Management in Atlanta. Prior to FISCO, he was the Director of Marketing and Client Service for six years for Havell Capital Management and a Senior Vice President  of CRA RogersCasey (formerly SEI) where he led the firm’s Capital Markets Group and their Due Diligence effort. He started his career as the Managing Director for the Center for Research in Security Prices at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He has a BA from the University of Chicago in Economics and Philosophy and played football for the Maroons.

Among the many great things he said in this thorough, thoughtful review, Dave said:

The bulk of the book is devoted to the stories of successful fund of hedge fund investors. The book not only chronicles their histories and successes, but offers important insights into their investment processes and their outlook for the industry. Top Hedge Fund Investors also serves as a much needed ‘gut-check’ for the entire industry in our post- credit crisis world.

Current and potential hedge fund investors are well served by the candid and expansive interviews of successful hedge fund investors conducted by Rittereiser and Kochard. These managers run funds of funds, hedge funds that invest in other hedge funds. Far from the swashbuckling tales of mega-trades made by hedge fund managers, this book points out that, success = work. And for the nine managers profiled here, lots of work = lots of success.

“Today’s News” Gets “Top Hedge Fund Investors” Right

Posted in Uncategorized by Cathleen Rittereiser on September 8, 2010

My friend Kevin S. Gahwyler compiles a must-read daily email of hedge fund stories called Today’s News. He curates the most important stories, providing sharp, funny and provocative commentary by re-writing the headlines. Here’s what he told his readers about Top Hedge Fund Investors: Stories, Strategies, and Advice:

Most of you that are reading this have, like me, been in the industry a long time.  We have developed our style over the years through taking bits and pieces of individuals who were smarter, better and more experienced than us (I know many of you who know me will find this hard to believe) and made it their own.  This book provides some direct insight into the minds of some of the best hedge fund allocators in the industry.  Whether you perform due diligence, pitch to those who do (Both the marketer and the PM) believe it or not reading this might actually enhance your exceptional skills.  Granted the authors did not have the foresight to hire me to write their titles but they still did a great job.

So get a copy and read it.

Reviews for “Top Hedge Fund Investors”

Posted in Uncategorized by Cathleen Rittereiser on July 22, 2010

Two leading hedge fund industry news and research websites have written articles about Top Hedge Fund Investors: Stories, Strategies and Advice.

Christopher Holt, concluding his AllAboutAlpha.com article, said

We’ve seen the advance copy and it’s well worth the read. Rittereiser and Kochard have essentially distilled the essence of what drives some of the alternative investment industry’s most influential leaders. They have coaxed these luminaries into revealing not only their investing strategies and outlooks, but also the personality traits and life experiences that make them tick. The result is a must-read for anyone looking for an edge in, or considering a career in, the alternative investment sector.

AllAboutAlpha.com offers readers a free download of Chapter 7, the story of asymmetrical talent Mark Anson, CIO of Oak Hill Investments.

Opalesque.com offered readers an exclusive first look in an article about the book’s underlying message about transparency and communication.

New to this market is “Top Hedge Fund Investors: Stories, Strategies, and Advice” by Cathleen M. Rittereiser and Lawrence E. Kochard, PhD, CFA, an in-depth look at hedge fund investing that provides readers with a noteworthy dose of transparency into the fund of hedge funds industry.

The pair managed to secure from these hedge fund investors information on everything from manager sourcing to evaluating performance and risk to redemption triggers (in fact the only thing it seems the managers interviewed do not detail is the actual “secret sauce” models they use). The level of information is noteworthy, and I’m not sure such transparency of fund of hedge funds investing techniques would have been a feasible project prior to 2010.

Opalesque is a subscription-only website, but News Editor and the article’s author, Kirsten Bischoff, provided a copy for Top Investors readers to download. Opalesque Exclusive ‘Top Hedge Fund Investors’ Highlight the Importance of Communication
